Maisha Walker

In 1999, Maisha took her triple background in finance, direct marketing and computer programming and founded message medium, a New York marketing firm that guides small businesses to boost profit, increase response, and harness the Internet. In addition to message medium's small business clients, Maisha maintains an impressive list of consulting clients including, AOL/Time Warner., Unilever, The New York City Department of Education, The Princeton Club of New York, Delia*s - one of the largest clothing distributors for girls in the world, and Save the Children whose YouthNOISE initiative Maisha helped to launch and which has won several awards for its creative use of technology.

Maisha has provided strategic, design, marketing and technical guidance for initiatives in every space of industry - political campaigns, editorial, government, retail, non-profit organizations, professional associations, alumni communities, fine art and music, real estate, construction, bridal, health care, public relations, and travel & tourism.

Maisha's industry expertise, dynamic style and easy to follow delivery have her sought after as a speaker, panelist, teacher, and consultant, and featured in major publications providing expert advice on how to build and market businesses online.

Since 2004, Maisha has been demystifying Internet marketing and entrepreneurship and empowering entrepreneurs via classes funded by and in partnership with organizations like the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA), The Workshop in Business Opportunities (WIBO), The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ), The Church Avenue Merchants Block Association (CAMBA), Project Enterprise, and The NYC Department of Small Business Services/SEEDCO.

In 2005 message medium won a Small Business award from Manhattan Media and Commerce Bank, and was featured in Our Town magazine for its service to other small businesses through its consulting and entrepreneur education programs.

In 2008 message medium received the sole nomination from the New York City Commissioner for the annual New York Enterprise Report Small Business Awards, winning a finalist spot for innovation and excellence in Sales and Marketing.

Maisha is also an active volunteer. She is on the Board of Governors of the Princeton Club of New York, the Advisory Board of the NY Usability Professionals Association, a member of the Princeton University Alumni Council's Technology Advisory Committee and the national President of The Black Ivy Alumni League.

Prior to founding message medium, Maisha spent several years at international investment bank Morgan Stanley as part of a team reporting to the Board of Directors and CFO. Prior to that, Maisha was a direct marketer and trends analyst for New York Magazine. Maisha began her career in the Web and Internet industry 12 years ago as a strategy and operations assistant to the founder and president of Cybergrrl, which built the first Web sites for companies like Avon, and owns one of the first editorial Web sites catering to the still growing sector of women online. In 1997 Maisha also founded one of the first email magazines - e.vent - which brought her unique insight and perspective about events that shape our society and the New York experience to hundreds of subscribers.

A 1994 graduate of Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Italian, Maisha has a passion for languages which extends to spoken languages, visual languages, and the language of science. Her hobbies include all things computers (including programming since she was 9 years old), hiking, camping and canoeing, salsa and swing dancing, and amateur astronomy.
